Salmonellosis is an infection caused by Salmonella bacteria. Salmonellosis can be spread when you eat or drink contaminated food or beverages or when you come into contact with animals or people infected with the bacteria. It can also be spread when you come into contact with pet food and treats or surfaces contaminated with the bacteria.
Salmonella bacteria are commonly found in the intestines of animals and birds. Both animals and people can be carriers of salmonellosis. This means they are infected with Salmonella and can spread the illness to others without showing signs of sickness.

Should one go to childcare, school, or work if they have salmonellosis? |

Exclude symptomatic food handlers, childcare workers and attendees, and anyone caring for high-risk individuals (e.g., elderly or those with a weakened immune system) until symptom free for 24 hours or symptom free for 48 hours after discontinuing use of anti-diarrheal medication. This is to ensure diarrhea does not return after the anti-diarrheal medication has been stopped. If antibiotics are used, the person should be excluded until symptom free for 24 hours. If a relapse occurs, exclude again, and seek medical attention as needed. Follow the direction of your healthcare provider, public health case manager, or occupational health at your workplace. |
