Kawasaki disease is a rare condition that leads to inflammation of mid-sized arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. The cause is often unknown. However, genetics and viral infections may play a role in its development. Kawasaki disease most often affects children under the age of 5 years.
