Adacel® and Boostrix® are vaccines that protects against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis.

Licensed for use for ages four years and older.

Recommended for adolescents 14-16 years old and one-time dose for adults.

Given as a 0.5 ml injection in the deltoid muscle (shoulder).
Mild side effects
-
Redness, pain and/or swelling at the injection site.

Tiredness, headache, slight fever, generalized body aches, and/or sore or swollen joints.
-
These side effects are usually mild and only last 1-2 days.
Severe side effects are rare.
Abnormal reactions to see a doctor for and report to the Health Unit:

Hives;
-
Swelling of the face or mouth;
-
High fever (over 40°C or 104°F);
-
Wheezing and/or trouble breathing;
-
Convulsions or seizures;
- Other serious problems.
Allergic reactions such as hives, wheezing, swelling of the face and mouth, difficulty breathing, convulsions or seizures are extremely rare. However, if these symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately and contact our Vaccine Preventable Diseases team at 705-474-1400 ext. 5252.
Tetanus

Also known as lockjaw.

Causes painful, prolonged muscle spasms of the jaw, neck, arms, legs and stomach.

Can lead to broken bones, suffocation and/or death.
Diphtheria

Is a bacteria that spreads easily from person to person through droplets from the mouth, nose and throat of an infected person (sneezing, talking, or coughing).

Causes sore throat, fever, loss of appetite.
-
Makes the underlying tissue in the neck red, swollen and painful.
-
Can lead to breathing problems, difficulty swallowing, pneumonia, brain damage or death.
Pertussis

Also known as whooping cough.
-
Cough can last for 6-12 weeks making eating, drinking & sleeping difficult.

Can lead to breathing difficulties, pneumonia, brain damage or death.

Contagious for seven days prior to coughing.

Spreads easily from person to person through droplets from the mouth, nose and throat of an infected person (through talking, coughing, or sneezing).
