What is RF? |
RF stands for radiofrequency. Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (a.k.a. radio waves) are a kind of energy that comes from technology. This energy is not harmful. In fact, we've been using it for a long time for things like phone calls and warming food quickly in the microwave. |
What is 5G? |
Fifth Generation (5G) is the latest wireless mobile phone technology, widely used since 2019. It’s expected to be applied to a wide range of new applications, increase technology performance, and even strengthen remote health care. |
What is Safety Code 6? |
Safety Code 6 is the set of guidelines from Health Canada about limiting your exposure to radiofrequency. The Code is based on peer-reviewed literature with the goal of protecting you from negative effects of RF exposure. |
What are the potential health risks of 5G?
At this time, there is no consistent evidence to prove exposure to phones, Wi-Fi and other 5G technologies is bad for your health. If you’re exposed to approximately 50 times more RF than what is recommended in Safety Code 6, there may be some health effects, but that’s highly unlikely in everyday situations.
When our bodies are exposed to radio waves, they can make our internal tissues a little warmer. With the technology we use now, the warmth is very minimal and not harmful. If the radio waves have higher frequency, they don't go deep into our bodies; they stay on the skin and eyes. As long as we follow the rules about how much radio waves we can be around, 5G should be safe and not cause any health problems.
While we can expect to be exposed to these technologies more and more, RF levels are expected to stay within the limits of Safety Code 6.
Note: Only a few studies have been carried out at the frequencies to be used by 5G. Further research is needed to clarify some findings which at this time do not consistently support clinical effects.
