Molluscum contagiosum is a common, mild skin disease caused by a pox virus. Although it can happen at any age, it is most common in children 1 to 10 years of age. Molluscum is harmless and will disappear without treatment.

Should one go to childcare, school, or work if they have molluscum contagiosum? |

No exclusion necessary. Once your child’s doctor confirms that it is molluscum, your child can continue to attend childcare and/or school. Remind them to wash their hands often. To prevent spread, try to ensure the child does not scratch the bumps. Fingernails should be kept short. Make sure your child doesn’t share towels, clothing, or other personal belongings with others. Note: Exclusion guidelines may differ for healthcare workers. Follow the direction of your healthcare provider or occupational health at your workplace. |
