New Food Business Guidance and Notification
The preparation, sale and service of food to the public is a regulated activity. This means that all food businesses are required to meet the minimum standards outlined in legislation to operate. As you plan to open a new food business, please review our Taking Care of Business guide. Information in this guide will assist you in ensuring your compliance with applicable legislation, help you understand your roles and responsibilities in operating a food premises, and will provide current food safety resources. For your reference the Ontario Ministry of Health has also created a Guide to Starting a Home-based Food Business.
Whenever food is sold or served to the public, the Health Unit is required to be notified. Food businesses are required under Section 16 (2) of the Health Protection and Promotion Act to notify their local health unit of their intention to start operating.
To notify the Health Unit of your intention to operate a food business, please complete our Notice of Intent to Operate a Food Premises form. This notification is required to be made before a food business opens.
