NIPISSING & PARRY SOUND, ON – April is oral health month in Canada. Maintaining good oral health is an important part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
Oral health starts at birth. The impact of poor dental health extends beyond medical problems and can impact quality of life by affecting a person’s ability to learn, to get a job, to work, as well as a person’s self-esteem and relationships.
Follow these steps to help keep your mouth healthier:
- Explore what dental programs and services are available within your community. Be preventive; don’t wait for pain.
- Choose a variety of healthy foods and drinks. Make water your drink of choice.
- Check your mouth regularly; look for signs of disease and oral cancer.
- Limit alcohol, and avoid tobacco, smokeless tobacco and vaping.
- Brush twice a day and floss nightly.
- Teach your children to brush and floss. Even if your child does not have teeth, keep their mouth clean by rubbing a damp cloth along their gums.
The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit’s Dental Clinic is also available to help those with limited or no dental insurance.
