NEWS RELEASE
NORTH BAY, ON – The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit (Health Unit) is recommending individuals aged five and older delay getting their COVID-19 booster dose until fall, 2023. This aligns with the updated guidelines put forward by the Ontario Ministry of Health earlier this month.
“We know late fall and winter are peak times for respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 to spread, and so delaying your COVID-19 booster until early fall will help ensure you have the best protection going into the respiratory season,” says Dr. Carol Zimbalatti, acting medical officer of health.
Individuals may choose to receive their booster dose before fall if appropriate for their own health status and personal situation. Individuals should also receive their COVID-19 vaccine before fall if they are starting, completing or re-initiating their first two doses of the vaccine. The Health Unit is offering limited summer vaccine opportunities at their North Bay and Parry Sound office locations by appointment only. People are asked to call 1-800-563-2808 to book an appointment or arrange to receive a vaccine through a participating pharmacy or health care provider.
The updated provincial COVID-19 vaccination guidelines echo recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, confirming that individuals aged six months and older will receive bivalent mRNA vaccines for their primary series, and these will continue to be used for booster doses among those who are eligible.
The updated guidelines are posted on the Ontario Ministry of Health’s website. Individuals with questions are encouraged to speak to their health care provider, call 811 or visit health811.ontario.ca for free, confidential, 24/7 health advice from a registered nurse.
